Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone. This bone would be unsuitable for the support of dental implants. In situations such as this, most patients would not be considered as candidates for placement of dental implants.
Today, it is possible to re-grow or regenerate bone where we need it for the support of dental implants. This, in turn, gives us the opportunity to more effectively restore esthetics and function to their natural state.
This regenerative technology lends itself to a technique called ridge preservation. This is the careful management of sockets after tooth extraction with the goal of preventing unsightly bone indentations or "defects" and a better cosmetic outcome of tooth replacement.
